Worm Farm Recordings
FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why are your hourly rates lower than others?
We don't want people's creativity, and the ability to make quality recordings, to be stifled by high rates. Our approach to what we do and how we do it is simple, effective and efficient. Our rates are very reasonable for the quality of service we provide. We want your project to be successful...and we want to share your success! Most projects will include some kind of results-oriented royalty or commission agreement in addition to the hourly rate.

Can you explain your rates and royalty/commission structure?
Here are some examples of how the "results-oriented" fee structure works for different projects:

1. A band wants to record a five song cd. The band takes advantage of our "get to know you" special ($50/3 hours). They decide to continue working with us. Additional recording process takes four hours. The mixing/mastering process takes six hours. File transfer/backup takes one hour.
$50 session + 11 hrs @ $25/hr + $10 tech fee
The band also agrees to royalty payments of 5% for each song sold online if more than 100 songs are sold.

2. A local artist/business person wants to do a 10 minute long video profile for a web site. The video shooting process takes three hours. The file transfer/backup process takes one hour. Editing takes four hours. Internet-ready file conversion takes a half an hour.
8.5 hrs @ $25/hr + $10 tech fee
The artist/business person also agrees to a 10% commission for each web site sale for six months after the video profile is posted online.

3. A realtor wants to create a "virtual showing" DVD for a historical property to send to prospective out of town buyers. Video shooting takes three hours. File transfers/backups take one hour. Editing takes two hours. DVD creation takes three hours.
9 hrs @ $25/hr + $10 tech fee
The realtor also agrees to a commission payment of 0.4% of the house sale price.

Who owns the audio or video "master recordings"?
Master recordings, or the unmixed/unedited original audio or video files, are co-owned by the customer and by us. We will never use the master recordings without your permission and you are free to use the master recordings for any purpose (any royalty/commission agreement terms apply). We always store all original files in at least two locations and they are always available to you. If you want your own copy of the master recordings, you will need to provide us with an adequately sized hard drive to transfer the files onto.

If Worm Farm does the audio or video recording, can I (or someone else) mix the final audio project or edit the final video project?
Yes! We do offer professional quality audio mixing/mastering and video editing services, but you can do your own audio mixing or video editing. Or you can take the original files to someone else. You will need to provide us with an adequately sized hard drive to transfer the files onto.

Do you have a recording studio for bands?
We offer on-site recording services. Our equipment is fully mobile and intended to be used in various locations. We can come to your practice space, home or just about any other place to record.

We do have access to space for recording, although it is not a "studio". Contact us for details and rates.
